The Treasure Coast

Welcome to the Treasure coast

Why do they call it the Treasure coast?

In 1715 a Spanish Armada consisting of fourteen ships was sailing north up Florida’s east coast laden with treasure for Spain when it met up with a hurricane.

Thirteen of the fourteen ships were blown onto the reefs and went down.

When word of the incident reached Havana, Cuba, a salvage crew was sent to collect whatever treasure they could, but their salvage methods were so poor that only a small portion of the treasure was recovered.

Some has been found by salvage companies.  Some of it remains in the sea.

And some of it washes up on the beaches.

The treasure is reportedly spread from Sebastian Beach to South Hutchinson Island.

Fredrick Douglas Beach is a known spot for coins here is also an area one mile north of the Ft. Pierce Jetty that is also good.

So when Walking the beach, keep your eyes open for your own treasure.

These were all found by a renter of mine who has moved down to the area and is a serious treasure hunter with metal detectors.

Coronavirus Thoughts

Stay safe!  Safety hat is optional.

Week four of the self imposed quarantine.  I am grateful for my health and the heath of my partner and family.  I am grateful for my employer who has worked to keep us safe and continues to pay my salary.  I am safe and comfortable.  Many are less fortunate.

If you can talk with crowds, but keep your distance,
Or walk with friends – nor lose the common touch,
If people stay away on your insistence,
If you can drink alone, but not too much.
If you can fill each unforgiving minute
With books and music, writing, song and dance,
Yours is the Earth and everything that’s in it,
(Just cancel this year’s holiday in France.)

Word of the Day: Bioluminescence

We were walking the beach on Hutchinson Island on a dark night  one of my favorite places in the world, when my partner saw something shiny in the water.

Dreaming it could be some lost treasure from the 1715 Spanish Treasure fleet that sunk offshoot, we searched the surf carefully.

Our eyes soon focused on yellowing blue dots the size of large diamonds. Grasping the sand revealed a handful of sand but no treasure.  Looking closely these glowing dots were coming in at a rate of one or two per crashing wave.

The light from these plankton creatures is similar to the light of a firefly. A pretty amazing phenomenon.

Ours were not as dense as this photo. It pretty cool nonetheless.

Bruce Hanna $100,000 Winning Hockey Shot

d

That was an amazing shot.  Proud to say that was my dad!

He made the local news, as well as People Magazine and the Today Show.

If anyone has any connections for the Today Show archives, I would love to get a copy of that tape.

Definitely had his 15 minutes of fame.
